Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
