The Reason the DNC Refuses to Release their 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the release regarding its own autopsy report on the last presidential race appears remarkable but not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body often functions more like a publicity machine than a political organization committed to building a volunteer base to secure victories.

An Environment That Avoids Dissent

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained within the Biden-Harris shadow throughout this past year. Publishing the findings would have indicated whether party leaders actually want to encourage public discourse about the strategic failures which allowed Donald Trump to return to the White House. Yet, the committee is acting as if there are no lessons to glean from the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

The top priority: will this lead to victory? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from what truly matters," a justification which was presented to justify concealing the document.

Major Failures an Analysis Could Have Examined

A genuine analysis of substance would confront key points of failure. These include:

  • Voter Disenchantment: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election proved pivotal during the tight recent race.
  • A Decision to Run: The unwavering insistence of the incumbent to stay in the race, and a very late withdrawal, has been criticized as denying the party's base of a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: During a time of economic anxiety, the campaign reportedly ceding to elite contributors without successfully attempting to confront the role of big business.
  • The Gaza Effect: An unwillingness to reconsider a policy position concerning a major international conflict reportedly led to alienating key demographic groups, particularly with youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Backing: Research indicates a significant decrease of support for the party among voters aged 18-29.

A Record of Evasion

Choosing secrecy fits a longstanding habit of evading uncomfortable facts. It echoes an episode in which virtually every elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's insistence on seeking another term right up until a disastrous televised debate compelled a change.

Meanwhile, overwhelming numbers of the electorate were repeatedly informing pollsters that they did not want the incumbent to run again.

Financial Issues

A substantive analysis might also probe questions regarding financial allocations, such as what sums were directed to high-priced advisors and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort which expended a staggering amount in a short period.

A Broader Problem

Ultimately, the blockage regarding the analysis points to a deference toward party leaders responsible for a disastrous electoral effort. The message for ordinary supporters – including millions of loyal volunteers – is that they cannot be trusted to understand what the leadership have learned based on an analysis compiled from conversations with insiders.

An organization unwilling to honestly assess its own failings finds it difficult to climb out of the pattern that ended up being so advantageous to their opponents.
