The Top Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

At first glance, Lux could seem more like a challenging scholarly challenge rather than a new popular music project by a musician who just had a last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Broken into four separate parts and sung in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning symphonic work investigating female mystique, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently via the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, carried by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the work of other artists appear rather small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album manages to escape dry academic posturing is almost miraculous, with full praise belonging to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to blend historical sounds with the present, its scale feel far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more precarious. The element that really raises this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful spirit shines brightly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds down with comedic force. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—where you is going next."

Nearly each song finishes at a totally different place than where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style begins out dark and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves navigating the line of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that the album has become the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in English builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly nagging melodies while it spins upward. That trick gets echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, weaving layered melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires patience to fully explore but never feels like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
