Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge particular decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
